Often new authors come to me and hopefully hold out their books to ask, “I just published this and it’s not selling. Can you help?”
Sadly, most of the time, the answer is no.
Because…
…they didn’t set their book up for success!
My launch process is a six-month timeline of doing just that, of making sure the metadata, distribution, reviews, and pre-launch promos are in place. Friends keep asking me for a checklist - and it’s finally here.
The Indie Kids Launch Checklist is now available to paid subscribers.
Your checklist is incredible! It's so detailed; it's not just another list of things so common every author knows them. And it's WAY more than I've been doing for my books. I'm totally going to use this, and I'll bet I am so much more successful because of it. It's a DIY guide to self publishing in 5 pages! — Donna Boock, author of Kinzie’s Kinventions
The Importance of Metadata
My launch strategy assumes first that metadata is crucial to your success. Metadata is all the information about your book: cover image, author, author biography, description, keywords, categories, publication date, # of pages, reading levels, and more.
In a 2017 Nielsen Book US Study, titles with metadata averaged 75% more sales than those without metadata. Children’s books with complete metadata sell 55% more. It’s worth taking the time to get these details right. Once you have the data correct, then it needs to be make available everywhere your book is distributed. This takes time and diligence. Double-checking. Triple-checking.
Remember: 55% more sales!
The Importance of Distribution
A second assumption of my launch strategy is that distribution is crucial to your success. If you only sell books on Amazon, your sales are limited by that platform. Sure, it’s a big platform and can bring in great sales.
But what are you missing? Educational distributors, opportunities for special sales, other ebook distributors, and more are available for the taking. Each of those opportunities, though, takes time. That’s why the six-month launch period is important for my launches.
