I’m curious (and concerned) that your Ingram person isn’t sharing exact sales numbers from the various outlets. Why?
Also, as a complete newbie, this is my concern about aggregators in going wide. I upload my stuff to Ingram or Draft to Digital, but I know they’re not watching for the kinds of things you’ve discovered. I’m wondering if we might be better served by choosing a smaller number of platforms and managing them directly?
It's Ingram policy not to share specific numbers from different outlets. They are not MY customers, but Ingram's customers, thus proprietary information. I use Ingram because it reaches the industry, both domestic and international. There's no replacement for them.
For ebooks, I've gone direct for Apple and GooglePlay, for example, but for children's books, they aren't a big market. It's more efficient to use D2D.
Thanks for the clarification, Darcy. It just seems that if you knew your exact numbers and where they were coming from, you could adjust your attention and advertising accordingly. A rep’s there to give you the info you need to sell more books, right?
Another question? Have you ever been repped by a distributor?
Yes, a rep is there to give you info, but they have to abide by their company's policies. Distributors? It depends on the distributor, a couple of them. They will assign a rep when you have enough sales on their platform.
